Fun?!?

Last time I talked about why we love to dance. Now let’s explore one of those answers.

“It’s fun!” This seems like a pretty simple and vague answer but if we explore the definition of fun the word has more depth than originally thought.

Fun:

enjoyable, entertaining, amusing, diverting, pleasurable, pleasing, agreeable, interesting

Now we have meat with our potatoes ( or if you’re a vegetarian like me some tofu).

When you started dance I imagine your parents signed you up  (unless you were like my friend Petra, who at 10yrs. of age read the newspaper, saw an ad for dance lessons, and had us both march down to the hall to TRY signing up on our own ( so Petra it’s your fault I became passionate and made a career out of dance).

Then you walked into your first dance class unaware of the new world you were about to enter. All of a sudden you were ask to not just run but to “feel like the wind”, leaping became “fly like a bird”, balance became “floating on a cloud”, and whatever other images your dance teacher used. Now it wasn’t just a set of physical movements or exercises but a land of imagination. Soon not only were you using images but also emotions which helped embellished the movements more. With every step, every breath you were 100% engaged. How can you not have FUN when you are creating and exploring.

So when you go to your next class or do your next performance ask yourself “what part of this makes it fun for me?”  Please share in the comments below.
